Author Visit - Stewart Sutters

Dear One Degree Academy.

Thank you for the amazing and warm welcome on Wednesday 21st May, during my school visit. I felt hugely privileged to be able to visit your school and share some of the day with students from St. Mary’s, Roehampton and then Bournemouth and Northampton classes in assembly. And a big thank you to the students who looked after me during lunch. It is quite scary to stand up in front of a class of children and share your story. As an author/illustrator, you never know if they are going to like it or not. I loved all the questions, including some of the awkward ones, and ones you least expect. Certainly, keeps you on your toes. A particular shout-out to one of the boys in Roehampton who guessed my age at 41. I’ll take that.

I wish I could have filmed the reaction on the students' faces when I showed them an actual Stewbot robot that I built. I would watch it back every day.

It is the one reason I started this tough journey into becoming a children's picture book author/illustrator. I only wish I could have chatted for hours and hours as the students genuinely seemed interested in my work and process. I would love to have spoken more to Year 3 about the animations they are currently making in Computing.

It was also so lovely to meet the students with their parents/guardians at the book fair. A massive thank you for those students who queued up to buy a book.

One of the questions from the children yesterday was "are you famous?” ... Well, during my visit to One Degree Academy, the students and teachers certainly made me feel famous.

I look forward to coming back to the school as soon as my next book is ready, and I would love One Degree to be one of the first schools to read it.

PS. I look forward to the new robot thank you appreciation. My personal favourite was the Elvis one!

Kind regards,

Stewart

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club bookings for Summer 2 will go live on MCAS Monday 26th May 2025. As normal, EYFS will go live at 5:30, KS1 18:00 and KS2 18:30. There are limited spaces in the Breakfast Club and failure to book will mean your child will be denied entry next term. The booking window will close on Sunday 1st June 2025.

Class Photos

This is a reminder that our annual school photographs will be taking place on Monday 2nd June. The format will be class photos only. Please can you make sure your child is in full school uniform as usual and they bring their P.E. kit separately. Once the photos have been taken, proof cards will be given to ODA for distribution to parents. The instructions for ordering and payment of photos will be clearly printed on the proof cards. There will be a one-week window to order your photos if you would like them delivered for free to school. All orders will be delivered to ODA before the end of the summer term.

ODA’s Got Talent

ODA's Got Talent is back! We had so much fun last year with the amazing acts we saw and would love for the children to participate again. The first round will be in class on Friday 6th June during golden time.

If your child would like to participate, please come prepared with a 2-minute and 30 seconds (maximum) act of your choice! Backing music and costumes welcome. Please get your child to let their teacher know what they will need when they come back after half-term.

STRIVE Fest 2025

We are really excited for STRIVE Fest 2025, which will be taking place on 25th June, 2:30-4:00pm. As always, we are looking forward to celebrating a great year with our community filled with fun and performances. One of the things that makes this festival so special is the incredible array of food donations from families for our buffet. If you are able to donate any home-cooked delights, please fill out the short Google form here and we will be in touch.

Swimming Pool

Sadly, the ODA swimming pool is now closed! We want to say a BIG thank you to Karen and Victoria for all their hard work helping your children learn to swim confidently. The progress has been AMAZING!

We hope everyone enjoys the half term break and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday 2nd June for the final half term of the academic year.
