Home Learning

Home learning is really important at One Degree Academy. Research shows that regular retrieval of information ‘helps to make it stick’ which is why we use our online platforms as a way of helping children retrieve information they have already been taught and practise it over and over again. We find that children who complete their home learning consistently and regularly are much more likely to do better in school.

We also feel it’s super important to promote a love of reading (the number one skill our children need) through:

  • Learning how to read (eg. decoding words - phonics)
  • Understanding what they have read (eg. answer questions using the text about what they have just read)
  • Applying their understanding to the through-line of the story (eg. how does what they’ve just read link in to what is happening in the book)
  • Making links to other texts/events in the real world (eg. are character choices similar/different to other characters in books or real people in the world)

Books, both fiction and non-fiction, can be an amazing escape, act as an inspiration and help shape our children’s aspirations in the future. They can explore conflicts and resolutions and can help shape the understanding of their moral compass - why wouldn’t we want to promote that? They also help impart knowledge and research shows that children that know more tend to do better!

It’s also really important to keep up to date with your child’s learning and curriculum with our weekly home learning videos. These have updates from your child’s teaching teams about their learning that week so you can discuss this with them at home. You can find the home learning videos and other One Degree Academy videos here on our Vimeo Channel.

If you have any questions about your child’s home learning, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
